10. Facts about lying
1. Lying is addicting
60% of adults can’t have a ten minute conversation without lying at least once.
2. Nobody has ever found a lie detector that works
All lie detectors measure are levels of stress and anxiety — and, given that many liars are cool and practiced under pressure, this doesn't tell you much about how truthful they're being.
3. Liars often fool themselves, too
It's just as easy to fool yourself with lies as it is to fool other people.Though cheaters and boasters often seem like transparent liars to other people, it's very likely that they are actually fooling themselves. A study showed that people who cheated their way into better scores on tests nevertheless overvalued their own abilities.
4. Two-year-olds can deliberately lie
Humans develop the ability to lie soon after they learn to walk.
5. Compulsive lying makes you smarter
People who lie all the time have a lot more connective "white matter" in their prefrontal cortex, the brain region devoted to cognition and reason. By having more connections you can jump from one idea to another and you can come up with more random stories and ideas.
6. It’s harder to lie to people you’re attracted to
The more you are attracted to a person the less is the ability of lying to them face to face. The emotional chaos that the person is experiencing when with the one he is attracted to, makes it harder for the brain to come up with a believable story.
7. "Truth serum" does not actually prevent you from lying
Despite everything you've seen in movies, sodium pentathol or "truth serum" does not actually make people tell the truth. It simply causes people to spew an endless stream of information — some truth, some fantasy — because their mental filters have been temporarily removed.
8. People usually lie when they are pressed for time
Lies are not usually premeditated acts of evil. The reality is that most people lie because they have to make a quick decision and don't have time to think about the social consequences of a falsehood.
9. January - the month of lies
People tell more lies in January than any other month. The average person tells 217 lies in January (about seven per day). Usually about what they did on vacation, what they got and gave for Christmas, just how much they gorged themselves on holiday food.
10. The lie in the writing
People are more likely to lie when they're writing than when they're talking to you, face-to-face. A study found that people tell about three more lies in an instant message conversation than they do face-to-face and about five more lies over email
