Psychology: Meaning Pt. 2: Purpose (SooDoneWithYou)
Heya~
Introduction:
What's up everybody. It's me again, that guy who makes long threads that nobody reads lul
I'm back with another establishment of everybody's most anticipated series, meaning (that was sarcasm, for all the kids who didn't get it).
So the topic this time is purpose. Some people find meaning in life from belonging, like I mentioned in my last thread, but others find it in purpose. Finding purpose in life is something that can counteract loneliness or a lack of belonging anywhere. Knowing that you are doing something worthy is enough to feel meaningful in life.
Second Pillar: Purpose
Finding purpose in life isn't all about finding a job you enjoy though. Finding meaning in purpose means that you're giving something to the world or yourself. Using your strengths to help not only yourself, but others as well. For example, a teachers job may be to teach students a certain subject, but their purpose instead might be to guide the students in understanding the material as well as through life in general. Some parents might say that instead of whatever their job is, their purpose is to raise their kids.
Although most people do in fact find their purpose in work. Time spent outside of work may be devoted to entertaining and helping yourself, but work is the place where you're contributing to society and other people. This is why some people may spend more time working then you could stand. It's because chances are that they find meaning in their work and you do not, put simply. That's not to say you hate your work or that it doesn't matter, but rather that you find meaning in your life elsewhere, whether that be another purpose or one of the other meaning columns.
The fact that most people find purpose at work actually shows a problem in society as a whole. Things like disinterest in work, or unemployment aren't just problems for countries economically, but also mentally and socially. Jobs that people don't find at all meaningful drain them. People find purpose in all sorts of things, whether that be engineering, music or journalism. The important thing is finding something that you feel good doing which also pays enough for you to maintain.
Without finding purpose in life, people tend to wander and become stagnate. Purpose is what drives us forward in life, and is at least somewhat necessary in finding meaning.
Conclusion:
Did you make it to the end? Good for you, a pat on the back and a cookie is your reward (Disclaimer: There are no cookies being given). Anyway, this is part two. Not quite as long as part one because it's just a pillar rather then the full explanation of what meaning is.
Questions:
1.) Do you have a purpose in life?
2.) Do you think having purpose is important to a meaningful life?
3.) What do you think is more important, purpose or belonging?
